This blog was created to bring awareness to the endangered state of the orangutan species
and to share what can be done to help them.
Orangutan Facts
- Orangutan means "man of the forest"
- Adult males can weigh up to 200 pounds
- Their diet consists mainly of fruits
- They are arboreal, meaning they spend the majority of their time in trees
- They help the forest ecosystem by distributing seeds
Current Threats
The main threats to orangutan populations are deforestation and illegal poaching/hunting.
Much of their native habitat in Borneo and Sumatra is being destroyed for farmland. There are three subspecies of orangutans currently recognized, the Bornean of which there are about 105,000, the Sumatran of which there are about 14,000, and lastly the Tapanuli orangutan of which there are only 800 left.

I appreciated how concise and to the point your blog was. It had the three most important steps which was: The purpose of your blog, which is to bring awareness to the threats to the orangutan species, explained what an orangutan is and specific characteristics, and the current threats in their environments!
ReplyDeleteThank you Alexander for these quick facts, some of them quite fun too. I didn't know the Orangutan meant "man of the forest" :O . How lovely! But also quite sad to read the current threats it faces. This gentle and intelligent animal is facing very critical endangerment. It was alarming to read that the Tapanuli only has 800 left of its kind.
