Orangutan Conservation This blog was created to bring awareness to the endangered state of the orangutan species and to share what can be done to help them. Orangutan Facts Orangutan means "man of the forest" Adult males can weigh up to 200 pounds Their diet consists mainly of fruits They are arboreal, meaning they spend the majority of their time in trees They help the forest ecosystem by distributing seeds Current Threats The main threats to orangutan populations are deforestation and illegal poaching/hunting. Much of their native habitat in Borneo and Sumatra is being destroyed for farmland. There are three subspecies of orangutans currently recognized, the Bornean of which there are about 105,000, the Sumatran of which there are about 14,000, and lastly the Tapanuli orangutan of which there are only 800 left.
